Agents of Contamination

Infection is a state when microorganisms succeed in entering a host and reproduce more of their kind. Disease is the outward clinical manifestation of this infection. All of us have been victims of infection and disease sometime or the other some quite frequently and some not so frequently. Most of us, most of the time, have only ourselves to blame for either catching an infection or for some one near and dear to us doing so. There are, however, some infections and diseases which come to us without any obvious fault of ours you  might call it just plain ill-luck. From, such diseases, we can do very little to protect ourselves, but in the case of most other infections or diseases, there is indeed a great deal we can do to protect ourselves as well as others. The ultimate objective of this unit is to equip you with enough information and knowledge for doing just this-to  protect yourself and those around you from infection and disease.

In order to do this, it is important to know something about what causes infection, how infection survives and multiplies, and how it spreads lo others. If we understand these aspects of infection and disease, we will be able to find ways and means to protect ourselves.

Objectives

After studying this unit, you should be able to :
  • list the different types of microorganisms that cause infection and disease
  • describe how an infection spreads
  • explain how infections can be controlled and prevented from spreading
  • discuss the role of  the environment in the spreading of infection.
