The Government of India launched the National Mental Health Programme during the 7th Five Year Plan period. The objectives were :
- to ensure availability of minimum mental health care,
- to encourage application of mental health knowledge in general health care,
- to promote community participation, and
- to stimulate efforts towards self-help the community.
A National Advisory Group on Mental Health has been constituted under the Chairmanship of the Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for the effective implementation of the National Mental Health Programme.
A provision of Rs. 25.00 lakh has been made for implementation of this scheme, during this year. Eleven Institutions have been identified for imparting training to health personnel under the programme.
11 Medical Colleges will be providing training in basic knowledge and skills in the field of mental health to the primary health care physicians and para-medical personnel. These centres will also coordinate the various Mental Health activities in the region and supply the health education materials to the other training centres in their respective regions and coordinate with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
