Mode of Operation of Analytical Approach

You have learnt about the principles and advantages of the analytical approach in Unit 14. The analytical approach is one which helps bop the facilitator and the learner to analyse the problem in terms of its intensity hi the family/community, causative factors and both curative as well as preventive measures in dealing with the problem.

Go through the following example to get a better understanding of the same.

Take a sample survey to find out about the local food problems. Try to assess the severity of the community's  food problems and their causes. One of the key questions to ask is : Do families often have difficulty in getting enough  food ? (Do families sometimes go hungry ?)

If the answer is No,  then the main nutrition problems probably result from people's eruing habits. These can be termed as personal and cultural problems because they are related to people's  nutritional knowledge and to their  customs, beliefs as well as traditions.

If the answer is Yes, then people's main problems probably have to do with growing, producing, storing or buying of foods. These are mostly economic, technical and  productivity linked (the  problems of poverty). However, people's  eating habits may also be a factor.

Thus the analysis of the community can be done in terms of
  • prevailing food problems
  • causes of food problems
  • consequences of food problems.

The analysis can further lead on to  working out of appropriate solutions and deciding about the most feasible solution to overcome the problems. This experience helps you to learn the skill of using the analytical approach in nutrition and health education.
